12-8-10 Sorrell 1 Cor Message 60: The Gospel

Message 60: The Gospel

Intro:  Recall three ways of believing in vain.

Fourth way of “believing in Vain” is if any element of the Gospel is not True; specifically the resurrection.

1 Cor. 15:14 And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.

1 Cor. 15:17 And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.

I.          As an Introduction to the Doctrine of the resurrection Paul reviews the Gospel.

1 Cor. 15:3-7 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: 5And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: 6After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. 7After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles.

II.        That which I also received

Gal. 1:11-12 But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man. 12For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.

III.       Christ

A.        Paul immediately after his salvation

Acts 9:22 But Saul increased the more in strength, and confounded the Jews which dwelt at Damascus, proving that this is very Christ.

B.        Paul preaching at Antioch Pisidia

Acts 13:23 Of this man’s seed hath God according to his promise raised unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus:

C.        Apollos at Corinth

Acts 18:28 For he mightily convinced the Jews, and that publicly, showing by the scriptures that Jesus was Christ.

D.        Phillip at Samaria

Acts 8:5 Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them.

E.         Peter on Pentecost

Acts 2:36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.

IV.       Died for our sins – The payment for sin was Death

Rom. 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Gen. 2:16-17 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: 17But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

Ezek. 18:4 Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.

V.        Our Sins – we are sinners

Rom. 3:10-12 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: 11There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. 12They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

Isa. 64:6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

VI.       According to the Scriptures – All that we believe about Salvation. All that we believe about everything we know to be True is – according to the Scriptures.

Psa. 138:2 I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.

John 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

Rom. 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Rom. 16:25-26 Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began, 26But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith:

VII.     He rose again according to the Scriptures – this is what the remainder of the chapter is about.
