Divisions and Heresies

 

Text: 1 Cor. 11:17-19

 

Introduction – Praise from verse 2 with one exception i.e. verses 3-16

 

I.          “praise you not” – Verse 17

 

II.         “Not for the better, but for the worse” – Verse 17

 

III.       Context “When you come together in the Church” – Verse 18

 

IV.       What is a Division*? Schism*

 

1 Corinthians 12:25 That there should be no schism* in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another.

 

V.        This is the work of a forward* man.

 

Proverbs 16:28 A froward* man soweth strife: and a whisperer separateth chief friends.

 

VI.       Example – the man who does not like the missionary.

 

VII.      Division ­eventually develop into Heresies* - Verse 19

 

VIII.     Mature Heresy*

 

A.        Network

B.         Recruit

C.        Update

D.        Keep watch for more things to disagree with

 

IX.       2 outcomes for unhindered heresies

 

A.        Overtake the Church (catholic church history)

B.         Leave and start another Church (little towns with 3 little Independent Baptist Churches within 3 miles of each other.)

 

X.        Result is always a monstrosity void of the presence of God

 

John 3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

 

XI.       At all stages of development, these harm the Church.

 

XII.      They must be – approved*
