Four Canaan Deal-Breakers

Text: 1 Cor 10:6, 10:11

Introduction:  God choose these four sins.

I.          10:7 – Idolatry

A.        Covetousness is Idolatry

            Colossians 3:5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:

B.        Definition of covetousness

C.        We put our opinions above God’s This is idolatry

D.        The incident refers to Exodus 32:6 (Golden Calf) but look at the part of 10:7 that was quoted.

II.        10:8 – Fornication will keep you out of Canaanland. 

1 Peter 2:11 Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;

III.       10:9  Tempting God.  Not asking but manipulating.   If you really loved me…

IV.       10:10 Murmuring.

A.        Definition -  A complaint half suppressed, or uttered in a low, muttering voice.

B.        Num 16:41; Exodus 16:8* - Against Moses; do you want a Pastor who will be politically correct or who will follow God.

C.        This is Jesus’ Bride

D.        Murmuring against Jesus’ Church and hanging out with those who do
