11-11-09 Raising Children Message 6: Biblical Discipline Failure to Discipline Your Children Using God’s Methods Text: Eph. 6:4 And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. Intro: We discipline. We do not punish or bring judgment upon our children. (use dog and electric shock as example.) Definitions Admonish – to caution or advise, to mildly warn or notify of a fault Charge – to entrust Chasten - To correct by inflicting pain. One method in bringing about proper discipline. Comfort – Strengthen or Cheer Discipline – Training to ensure proper behaviour broad heading. Exhort – To move to action by words or advise Nurture – To educate, to train Punish – To impose penalty by inflicting pain Reprove – To charge or convince of a fault to the face I. Gods Methods will not provoke your Children to Wrath II. God’s Ways require time and commitment III. The five-pronged method for proper discipline A. Training/nurture Prov. 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
