10-27-10 Sorrell 1 Cor Message 54: Both Sides of Toungues and Prophesy

Both Sides of Tongues and Prophecy

I.          The Missions Side of Tongues – Verses 21-22

Acts 2:7-11 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans? 8And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born? 9Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, 10Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, 11Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.

II.         The Church side of tongues  – Verse 23

            A.        For the Brother – does not understand therefore does not edify

B.         For the Unbeliever – this is his land.  Why speak in a tongue he does not understand?  Unimpressive

III.       The Missions side of Prophecy – Verse 22 “serveth not” as a sign

IV.       The Conviction Side of Prophecy Everywhere – Verse 24-25

Hebrews 4:12-13 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 13Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

V.        The Message and the Messenger – Verse 25

John 13:20 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.

VI.       The importance of this Truth

A.        For the messenger

B.         For the hearer
