Your Spiritual Growth and God’sWord

Text:    2 Timothy 4:13 The cloak that I left at Troas with Carpus, when thou comest, bring with thee, and the books, but especially the parchments.

I.          The Importance of the Word in Josiah’s life the greatest King ever

            2Chron 34:1

II.        The Word as it relates to Carnality and Perfection

A.        Be Perfect

Matthew 5:48 48Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

B.        Perfect = Like Jesus = Christian

Luke 6:40 40The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master.

C.        Perfection Comes from the Word of God

2 Timothy 3:16-17 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

D.        Therefore, being Like Jesus Comes from the Word of God

E.         Those who are unskillful in the Word are carnal, fleshly, unspiritual.

1 Corinthians 3:1-4 And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. 2I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able. 3For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men? 4For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal?

Hebrews 5:11 – 6:3 Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing. 12For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. 13For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. 14But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

1Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, 2Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. 3And this will we do, if God permit.
